Every year someone declares paid advertising dead, and every year the platforms report record revenue. What actually died is the era when clever targeting could rescue mediocre ads.

Targeting got automated. Creative didn't.

Ad platforms now do most audience optimization themselves — often better than manual settings ever did. The lever left in your hands is the ad itself: the hook, the message, the offer. That's where accounts win or lose.

Build an iteration loop, not a campaign

The teams beating rising costs run a simple weekly cycle:

  1. Ship three to five new creative variations
  2. Kill anything below the account average after enough spend to judge
  3. Break down why the winner won — hook, format, or offer
  4. Make next week's batch variations of the winner

Where new hooks come from

Not the brainstorm room. Mine your reviews, support tickets, and sales calls for the exact phrases customers use. The objection a prospect raises on a call is next week's best-performing headline, almost verbatim.

Judge ads by the right number

Click-through rate flatters entertaining ads. Judge creative by cost per qualified result — purchase, lead, booked call. An ad that entertains scrollers but attracts the wrong buyers is expensive noise. The accounts that survive rising CPMs aren't luckier; they just out-iterate everyone else.
